THERE IT IS! Swans Women are Premiers
In what was an absolute intense grand final at the Cavanbah Centre in Byron Bay on Saturday September 9, the Lismore Swans Women's squad did enough to hold up the Inaugural Premiership Cup against a gallant Ballina Bombers.
In slightly gusty conditions, goals were hard to come by with Captain Laura Small (Cahill) kicking the Swans only major of the game in the first quarter. Ballina however kept up the pressure and were unlucky on a fair few occasions to kick a goal, however it finally came mid way through the final quarter ensuring an intense finish.
Lismore scored 8 more behinds than Ballina to put the game out beyond a goal, and produced a massive final quarter tackle count to really apply solid pressure on their opposition.
The gutsy performances from the Swans came from all parts of the field with Full Back Amelia Wright solid in the last line of defence. Other Swans defenders in Georgina Morris, Stella Allen, Laura Harradine, Lauren Johnson and Tallara Berry also stood tall, applying some great tackles and moving the football out of harm’s way. Also starring performances from Ruck Tamara Hamshaw, midfielders Elsa Mangan, Laura Small and Emma Wilson ensured Lismore could transition anywhere on the field. Forward pressure was also a big factor, especially throughout the final quarter to keep the football in Lismore's half. Ruby Armbruster ensured her presence was felt with her experience and on-field leadership, pushing hard at every contest.
All 22 players did a great job, and that was confirmed when the final siren sounded, giving Lismore the first women's premiership in the Northern Rivers, and rewarding the club for its hard work in helping establish women's football in our region.
Coach Carl Merrison was focused and composed all game, issuing direct instructions and ensuring his squad were on board with his messages. The premiership also caped off a remarkable year in his vision and coaching style and was a just reward for hard work and dedication.
What a moment, what a day and what a truly remarkable year. Congratulations to our fantastic women's squad for what will always be remembered as a precious and unprecedented premiership. Our football club is simply greater because of you. Cheer Cheer.
